Nematode neurons imaged in action

Nature : Researchers have announced a new technique to display a living organism’s neuronal activity in three dimensions and in real time. Alipasha Vaziri of the University of Vienna and colleagues have imaged the complete nervous system of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans. They used calcium imaging and light-field deconvolution microscopy to capture the neuron signals and create a high-resolution, 3D image. The new technique is much faster than previous efforts, allowing researchers to capture 100 times as many images per second. The researchers plan to apply the technique to study how neurons respond to certain stimuli, and eventually they would like to improve the technique’s speed and resolution.
