Native Hawaiians clash over telescope assembly at sacred site

NBC News : The peaks of Hawaii’s highest mountains are sacred to native Hawaiians. They are also among the best sites in the world for astronomical observations. This past October, native Hawaiian protestors disrupted the groundbreaking ceremony for the latest telescope planned for Mauna Kea, the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope. Last week, as construction was set to begin in earnest, protestors returned to block access to the peak. After a standoff that lasted several days, the Hawaiian police department arrested 31 of the 300 protestors on Monday. Protests are set to continue, not least because the University of Hawaii’s 65-year lease on Mauna Kea is up for renewal.
