NASA puts future crew launches in the hands of private industry

AUG 06, 2012
Physics Today
BBC : Last week NASA announced that it had chosen three private companies to receive funding through the Commercial Crew Integrated Capability (CCiCap) program. SpaceX, Boeing, and Sierra Nevada Corp (SNC) will be provided with a total of $1.2 billion over 21 months to advance their efforts toward achieving human launch capability. SpaceX and Boeing are both working on traditional capsule-style vehicles, whereas SNC is pursuing a small shuttle-style vehicle. To launch their respective spacecraft, Boeing and SNC will use the Atlas V rocket, whereas SpaceX will use its own Falcon rocket.
