Mountain peak to be removed for new telescope

JUN 18, 2014
Physics Today

The Telegraph : The top of the 3000-m mountain Cerro Amazones, about 1 million tons in weight and located in the Chilean Andes, is scheduled to be removed later this week to create a flat surface for the construction of the European Extremely Large Telescope . The E-ELT will be the largest ground-based telescope on Earth when it is completed in 2022. Despite being ground-based, it will have 16 times the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope, mainly due to its 40-m primary mirror and use of advanced adaptive optics to counteract atmospheric turbulence.
