A Department of Molecular Biology has been established at the University of California in Berkeley to provide training leading to the master’s and doctoral degrees in that subject. Its initial staff will consist of the eleven members of the present Department of Virology and five additional professors from other departments of the University. Students will be allowed to specialize in one or more of seven fields, including ultrastructure, macromolecules, molecular and microbial genetics, cellular regulation and growth, biology of viruses and of bacteria, and bioenergetics. Closely affiliated research opportunities will be afforded in the Virus Laboratory, directed by W. M. Stanley and in the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics, headed by M. Calvin. The chairman of the new department is Robley C. Williams.
