It’s the birthday of Julio Garavito Armero, who was born 150 years ago in Bogotá, Colombia. Garavito studied mathematics and science at Colombia’s National Engineering School and then went on to direct the National Astronomical Observatory. He applied his mathematical skills to several problems in celestial mechanics, including the influence of the Moon’s subtly fluctuating orbit on Earth. In honor of his contributions to Colombian science, Garavito appears on the 20,000-peso bank note (which is worth $8.40).
