An accurately steerable radio telescope, with a 125‐foot elliptical aperture, began operating at Jodrell Bank on June 4. The device, known as Mark II, will complement Jodrell Bank’s 250‐foot circular radio telescope, Mark I, completed in 1957. Mark II has been designed with an elliptically shaped reflector measuring 125 by 83 ft, since, for a given reflecting area, a shape which is wider than it is tall may be more easily supported.
