JET starts up at Culham Laboratory

The Joint European Torus, second and largest of the new generation of tokamaks designed to achieve breakeven plasma conditions, was operated for the first time in June at the British Atomic Energy Agency’s Culham Laboratory. This marks the culmination of a five‐year, £175 million construction effort, coordinated and largely financed by EURATOM, with additional contributions from associated European governments.
