Intel releases new microchip series with always-on voice activation

SEP 08, 2014
Physics Today

MIT Technology Review : On Friday, Intel revealed a new line of microchips called Core M that have built-in voice recognition capability. According to Ed Gamsaragan, one of the company’s engineers who worked on the chips, the Core M chips will always be actively listening regardless of the device’s status. To activate the device, the user can set a two- or three-word phrase. The chips can also be set to only respond to a single voice. However, Gamsaragan cautions that the voice recognition is not precise enough to be used as a security process by itself. The chips also make use of Intel’s 14-nm transistor structures, which are more efficient and use less power than earlier generations.
