Independent commission to evaluate DOE labs

MAY 22, 2014
Physics Today

Science : The US Department of Energy (DOE) has created a new panel to review the effectiveness of the agency’s 17 national laboratories. The panel will be led by Jared Cohon, president emeritus of Carnegie Mellon University, and T. J. Glauthier, a former deputy DOE secretary. DOE has organized many similar panels in the past, but this panel was mandated by Congress. The panel will provide the first part of its report by 1 February 2015, which will include an evaluation of how well the labs’ priorities are aligned with DOE goals and whether there are areas of overlap or any evidence of mismanagement. The second part of the report will discuss possible changes to DOE’s lab system to solve any problems found.
