Hurricane Andrew makes landfall

On this day in 1992 Hurricane Andrew attained category 5 intensity before making landfall on Elliott Key in Florida. By the time Andrew had dissipated four days later, 65 people were dead. Estimates put the cost of the damage caused by the storm at $27 billion.
