Germany makes changes to improve science funding

JUN 04, 2014
Physics Today

Nature : Changes made to the German constitution last week will allow the federal government to provide permanent direct funding to its universities. Until now the country’s universities have been funded primarily on the local level, which made it difficult for the institutions to compete with those of other countries. The constitutional revision is the result of years of discussions, and it ends a six-month funding impasse . Although Germany’s federal government contributes some science funding through grant monies and its Excellence Initiative , the constitutional changes should allow more permanent financial support. The scientific community believes the move will improve job security, lead to lucrative research collaborations, and possibly allow the building of new scientific centers.
