Gas cloud nearing galactic center could reveal thousands of black holes

MAY 31, 2013
Physics Today
BBC : For the past two years, a blob of gas, dubbed G2, has been making its way toward the massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. As it draws near, astronomers hope to use it to study other, lighter black holes thought to exist in great numbers near the galaxy’s center. The spiraling of the gas around the black holes could cause it to heat up to millions of degrees and emit x-ray light, which could be picked up by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory or the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array. So far, the existence of a central swarm of black holes has not been definitively confirmed.
