Floating wind turbines could ride wave of the future

APR 23, 2012
Physics Today
Guardian : The US and the UK are collaborating to develop floating wind turbines to take advantage of the high wind speeds far offshore. The turbines could be located in areas of the ocean that are too deep to attach them to the sea floor. Such technology should increase the potential for offshore wind power and reduce the cost: Fixing the turbines to the sea floor and then venturing out to repair them is expensive; floating turbines could be repaired in port instead. The decision to collaborate was made just before this week’s Clean Energy Ministerial 3 , which will take place 25–26 April in London.
