On this day in 1665 the first issue of the world’s first journal devoted to science, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was published in London. From the outset, Phil. Trans. shared some of the properties of modern journals: Papers were certified and peer-reviewed; issues were disseminated and archived. Among the landmark papers published in Phil. Trans. was James Clerk Maxwell’s “A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field” (1865).
