Fermi space telescope creates new all-sky map

Forbes : Researchers analyzing data from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope have produced the most detailed all-sky map yet using extremely high-frequency light. The map contains some 61 000 gamma-ray photons, which took 80 months to collect. Gamma rays are thought to be produced when lower-energy light collides with accelerated particles. Hundreds of gamma-ray sources exist, including dense or massive stars, white dwarfs, neutron stars, pulsars, and black holes. Besides the many known sources, astronomers also found four dozen new ones that have not been detected at any other wavelength.
