Educator develops new math learning technique

MAR 05, 2014
Physics Today

Atlantic : A math educator is promoting a new curriculum that eschews the traditional sequence of math instruction for a system that more closely mimics the way children actually learn. Maria Droujkova believes that many children are turned off from math at an early age because of the repetitive calculations and memorization tasks involved. Her system, which she calls “natural math,” instead emphasizes games and free play over arithmetic drills and multiplication tables. And the methods are not just for kids; adults can join in too. In this article for the Atlantic, Luba Vangelova discusses Droujkova’s work and the philosophy behind it.
