Debris from Chinese launch damages two homes

DEC 04, 2013
Physics Today

Guardian : Two houses in China’s Hunan province were damaged by falling debris following the recent launch of the Chang’e 3 space probe. The incident is prompting the Chinese government to take precautions as it gears up to become a world player in the space race. Although 160 000 people were relocated prior to the launch and the two homeowners who suffered property damage were promptly compensated, China may need to institute an insurance plan, similar to those of the US and other countries, to cover any potential damage from its 20-plus launches each year. Another option the government is exploring is to develop recoverable rockets, which would not break up after launch.
