China and US battle over solar technology

JUL 23, 2012
Physics Today
New York Times : China has announced an investigation into imports from the US and South Korea of the kind of polycrystalline silicon used to make solar panels. China has also threatened tariffs on the imported material in response to two new duties the US placed on imports of Chinese solar equipment. The US claims that China is harming the US domestic solar industry by unfairly supporting its own solar industry and dumping inventory. Chinese solar manufacturers hold 60% of the global solar market, with the US accounting for 20% of their sales. Industry analysts and solar installers have indicated that import tariffs on both polysilicon and solar equipment will do nothing but hurt the solar industry and international efforts to increase alternate energy capacity.
