Canada to conduct review of its clean air regulations

Globe and Mail : Canada’s government has requested proposals to review the effectiveness and implementation of its Clean Air Regulatory Agenda (CARA). Such a review is required every five years and could cost up to $2 million. The last one was in 2010 and led to the renewal of the program in 2011. Established in 2006, CARA has instituted tough emission standards for vehicles and coal power. However, it has been criticized for simply following the policies made by other jurisdictions and for not addressing the growing gas and oil industries. As a result, although the current government pledged to reduce total annual greenhouse gas emissions to 612 million tons by 2020, it is on course to miss that target by more than 100 million tons.
