Canada pulls satellite from Russian launch

APR 28, 2014
Physics Today

New Scientist : To protest against Russia’s recent actions in Ukraine, the Canadian government has decided not to proceed with the launch of its M3M satellite aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket in June. Although the decision is not expected to affect Russia’s launch, which includes several other satellites, it is one of multiple sanctions the Canadian government has imposed on Russia since it deployed troops to Crimea in March. The M3M, or Maritime Monitoring and Messaging Microsatellite, is being developed by Canada-based COM DEV International for the Canadian Space Agency. The microsatellite will track ocean-going vessels in Canadian waters. Now COM DEV must find another rocket to launch its satellite.
