It’s the birthday of Augustus Love, who was born in 1863 in Weston-super-Mare, England. Love studied mathematics at Cambridge University and took up a position at Oxford University. Love’s research focused on elastic media in geophysical contexts. His most famous contribution is his prediction in 1911 of horizontally polarized surface waves, which are now known as Love waves and recognized as a distinct class of seismic wave
