32% of new power capacity in US in 2011 is wind power

Ars Technica : According to a report by the US Department of Energy, new wind generators added 7 gigawatts of capacity in 2011, less than half of China’s 17.6 GW, but double that of third-place India. The US’s total capacity of wind generation is 47 GW, also in second place behind China. Maximum capacity doesn’t reflect actual generation; the overall percentage of electricity generated by wind is only just above 3% in the US, putting it in 13th place worldwide. The rate of construction of new wind generators is expected to continue to rise in 2012 and 2013. Among the new projects is the US’s first offshore wind farm , which was just approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. In 2014, however, a construction incentive package is scheduled to end unless Congress approves an extension.
