Steve Detweiler and I collaborated about 35 years ago, when we were both at Yale, and we wrote a couple of papers together on Kaluza-Klein theories. It was a very enjoyable experience for me. In 1982 he left Yale for the University of Florida, and we essentially lost contact. I have pasted below the obituary appearing on the UF physics department website. Steve was a valued member of the gravitation/general relativity community, and he had been active in the GGR topical group of APS. He will be missed.
From the UF website: “It is with deep sadness that the Physics Department announces the passing of our colleague and friend, Dr. Steven Detweiler. Steve joined the Physics Department as an Associate Professor in 1982 and was promoted to Professor in 1987. He made significant contributions in all the main areas of the department’s mission: his research on gravitational physics was recognized by election to a fellowship of the American Physical Society, his enthusiastic and committed teaching earned him Physics Teacher of the Year honors, and he provided sterling service both to the department (as Associate Chair, among other roles) and the profession (through leadership and editorial board positions in the APS). He was always a warm colleague and a fountain of common sense. This news has come as a great shock to the department and everyone who knew Steve as a friend, co-worker, or teacher. Our thoughts go out to his family.”
