Zhores Alferov, who received a Nobel Prize in Physics “for the development of semiconductor heterostructures for high-speed optoelectronics” in 2000 and donated one-third of the funds for the support of education and science, died on 1 March 2019.

In 1973 Alferov established the department of optoelectronics at Electrotechnical University (LETI) in St Petersburg, Russia. In 1997 he established the Academic University — Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the only university at the academy. He was the author of more than 500 scientific papers and was indisputably a figure of the world scale as a person and as a scientist.

As an undergraduate student at the department of optoelectronics at LETI, I studied under Alferov and had firsthand experience of the breadth of his knowledge as a world-class scientist.
