Yong-Ki Kim , 74, member of the American Physical Society, the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association died during a car accident in Fairbanks Alaska on 9 September 2006.
Kim’s research focus was on the application of relativistic atomic theory to atomic structure and collision. Relativistic and nonrelativistic wave functions are used to calculate energy levels, transition probabilities, and electron-impact cross sections of atoms, molecules, and their ions. Kim’s emphasis was on practical methods to generate atomic data appropriate for various applications, such as plasma processing of semiconductors, modeling of plasmas in fusion devices, and lifetimes of metastable atomic levels. Kim had been a member of NIST since its formation in 1988. In the last four years he had worked as a contractor at NIST after he officially retired from the organization.
