It was with surprise and deepest regret when I heard that Vlad Mitlin had passed away on Sept. 2, 2007 of complications from Parkinson’s disease.
Vlad immigrated to the US in the early 1990’s from Russia and later obtained US citizenship. He received an Applied Mathematics masters degree (1981) and a PhD in Fluid Mechanics (1987) from the National Gas Research Institute in Moscow. When he came to the US, he began post-doctoral studies in my research group in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin. He was an accomplished mathematician and his general area of expertise was condensed matter physics. After leaving UT, he went into industry and began an interest in digital communications, software development, and simulation tools. He authored over 70 papers and 3 books, “Nonlinear Dynamics of Reservoir Mixtures "(1993), Performance Optimization of Digital Communication Systems (2006), and The mu-Transform and Its Application to Non-linear Systems. (2006). In 2003 he left Metric Systems Corporation to begin his own consulting business in San Diego. He leaves behind his wife Carole and their 4 year old daughter Mariell, and an adult daughter Victoria.
