My father, Tom, was born in Bridgeport, CT, the eldest son of Thomas A. and Martha J. (Wendt) McGuire Jr. He was a graduate of Yale University and served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant during WWII. After the war, he returned to Yale and earned his Ph.D. in physics, specializing in magnetism.
Tom began his research career at the now disestablished Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, MD. In 1960, he joined IBM and continued his basic research in magnetism at the Thomas J Watson Research Center in Yorktown Hgts, NY. Throughout his career, he authored over 180 articles and papers, along with several patents. Tom worked well into his 80’s.
My father truly loved and lived for his research. His family believes he was a respected member of the physics community and that he and his contributions will always be remembered.
Tom is survived by his three children and their families, Cynthia Staub and husband, Ronald and their son, Carl; Ruth McGuire and her daughter, Sarah Bushek; and Thomas C. McGuire and wife, Susan and their son, Thomas, and daughters, Bryce and Wallis. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Ruth A. (Stone) McGuire.
A funeral Mass was celebrated August 18th in Yorktown Heights, NY at St. Patrick’s Church and he was laid to rest at Amawalk Hills Cemetery. A Navy honor guard was present at the burial.
