Obituary of Ronald Fuchs (1932-2012)

Ronald Fuchs died on November 10, 2012. A 1954 graduate of CalTech, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1957. After a Fulbright year at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart and three years at MIT’s Laboratory for Insulator Research, he came to Iowa State University. His research program centered on the optical properties of solids and scattering of light by collections of particles. He is best known for the Fuchs-Kliewer mode, a vibrational mode on the surface of insulating crystals.
