Obituary of Alexey N. Sissakian

The Russian Pugwash Committee announces with deep regret the sudden death of Academician Alexey N. Sissakian, on May 1, 2010.

Academician Alexey Sissakian was a son of Academician Norayr Sissakyan, who was a famous Soviet scientist and an active participant of International Pugwash in 1950-1960s. Alexey Sissakyan was a famous Russian scientist in the fields of elementary particle physics and methods in theoretical and mathematical physics. He was the author of more than 350 scientific papers.

He was Head of the Chair at the Moscow Institute of Technical Physics and the National Research Nuclear Unversity - MIPHI, and Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University. For many years he was a resercher at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Moscow Region. In 2006 Acad. Sissakyan was elected as a Director of JINR.

Alexey Sissakyan was Acting Member (Academician) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and member of the RAS Presidium. He was also elected as a President of Union of Scientific Cities of the Russian Federation.

He had a poetical talant - he was author of 6 collections of poems, as well as many poems and essays that were published in periodicals.

He began active participation in the activity of the Russian Pugwash Committee in 2007. Acad. Sissakian was organizer and Chairman of the Dubna branch of the Russian Pugwash. In 2009 he was approved by the RAS Presidium as the First Deputy Chairman of Russian Pugwash Committee. He was the organizator of several Russian Pugwash meetings. He also organized the visit of the President of the Pugwash Conferences Amb. Dhanapala to Dubna in June 2009. He participated in the 58 Pugwash Conference in the Hague in April 2010.

Until last of his days, Alexei Norairovich Sissakian was an active researcher and organizer of scientific and technical international cooperation.

We shall miss him not just as a scientific and Pugwash collegue, but also for his kindness and his great poetic talant, and his interest in science history.
