New York Times : Glaciers in western North America could shrink by 70% by 2100, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience. Garry Clarke of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and colleagues combined high-resolution models of current glaciers, physics principles regarding ice flow, and other methods to predict ice loss over the next century. According to Clarke, the melting glaciers show the difference between the short-term effects of weather and the long-term consequences of climate change: One bad winter won’t save the glaciers, he said. However, the projections also indicate that if strong measures were taken to combat climate change, the drastic glacial melt could be mitigated.
