The Guardian: On Monday, Lawrence Krauss of Arizona State University tweeted that more than one individual had confirmed to him a rumor that the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) team is preparing a paper describing the detection of a gravitational-wave signal. If true, the wave would confirm a major prediction of Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Gabriela Gonzalez of Louisiana State University and spokesperson for the LIGO collaboration said the team is still analyzing data from the instrument’s initial run and doesn’t have any results to share yet. In the past, the team running LIGO has injected signals into the data to ensure that the research team could identify them, but Krauss has indicated that the current rumor, which he places at a “60%" certainty, is not centered around one of those tests.
Despite the tumultuous history of the near-Earth object’s parent body, water may have been preserved in the asteroid for about a billion years.
