BBC : Although the current exceptionally strong El Niño is now on the decline, its effects are still being felt, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The warming of Pacific Ocean waters, which peaked in November and December, has caused extreme weather events around the world and fueled record-high temperatures in 2015 and January 2016. But we are not out of the woods yet: According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a period of Pacific cooling known as La Niña may be on its way. NOAA says there is a 50% chance that La Niña occurs this summer and an 80% chance by the end of the year.
